this little light of mine i'm gonna let it shine The day was nearing it's end, the sun kissed the tips of the trees and left an eerie golden aura on the world. Were it not for the chorus of croaking coming from the toads and frogs coupled with the gentle hum of the crickets, the world would be shrowded in silence. truthfully, he welcomed the interruption, the lack of silence. any time free thought was allowed to fester uninterrupted, pain followed. Ashenstar sat at the edge of camp, near his den with a stone cold look on his face. From the beginning, he had never imagined that he would be anything more than a feirce warrior, loving mate, and dutiful mentor. What Lionstar saw in him, somedays he would never know. He was just as flawed as the next cat, but maybe it was those flaws that had pushed him to be better. The world had begun to darken and finally the great stone colored cat stirred. He was a force, that much he knew. Between his long, full-muscled frame and his thick, unending fur it gave Ashenstar the look of a cat three times his size and a formidable appearance. Then there was the eyes. They were an amber color, so fierce and passionate yet chillingly cold it could stop anyone in their tracks. This eve though, he had no enemies in sight. On this eve, he would wander through the territory with his heart heavy. Wondering what it could have been like. His large paws carried him forward gracefully, soundlessly. Where will you go...he scolded himself. Nowhere that they cannot follow. His eyes cast a wary glance toward the heavens and he knew that no matter the cost, ShadowClan should not be alone tonight. A deep sigh sounded from the hollows of his chest cavity, before a rumble sounded in his throat and he let out a soft "mrrw". The tom's gaze changed, from a hardened one of a warrior to a softened look of a cat that held the weight of the world on his shoulders. He padded soundlessly toward the entrance of camp, his large body passing between a couple of cats who greeted him with smiles and friendly nods. He returned them - if only half heartedly before settling before the enterance. His mind liked to play tricks on him these nights when he was guarding the camp. It let him wander to the kits he would never come to know and he felt his heart pang with hate for the she-cat responsible. But if they were alive, she would never tell him. She'd told him that herself. So he would settle here tonight, like he did on many nights before, and he would let the pain drive him through. If they were alive, he would find them. Until then, ShadowClan needed him, and he wouldn't let anyone else down.

Smallkit The darker it became, the darker the thoughts of the current youngest kit in the clan became. Her day had consisted of what most of her days consisted of, sulking and trying to find some way to just wither away. Her brother had attempted to play with her and even managed to get her to eat today, but the small morsel of food she had didn't last long. Then again, it was more than she normally had in a day...her mother had made sure to give her the least amount of food as possible, telling others that the kit just didn't want to eat. And everything was her fault, she even had the physical scars under her fur to remind her of it. From birth she had been shunned by her father, and even her own mother. Her father had tried to kill her, and his death was on her conscious. She had caused him to be killed that day...it should have been her. She was weak, useless. Let's not forget to mention the next moon of her life where her mother spent her time with her brother, ignoring her daughter. Her mother had starved her, showed her no affection, made her feel as if her father's death was her fault. And to Smallkit, it was. After hearing it so many times, it slowly sunk in. She had caused his death. As if that wasn't enough to break any cat, her mother had tried to finish the job her father had started only to be killed herself...once again right in front of Smallkit. Now she had two deaths on her conscious. They were both her fault, and she was left to burden it all. Her brother had been lucky, he had been born large and looked just like their father. He didn't face their mother's wrath. Smallkit was just not meant to survive, she had been told this far too often. When she had learned that no cat blamed her for the death of both parents, she was baffled. How could they not? She was there for both of them, she had caused them to not be around her! She was alive and they weren't. She didn't deserve their sympathy or anything, she deserved an even worse fate than her parents! Why couldn't the others see this? She was just this tiny kit, no bigger than a newborn, who couldn't do anything right. And here she is, almost a moon after the death of her mother. Still, no bigger than most newborns. She ate as little as possible, letting her brother have most of her share of what was brought to them. She ate just enough to wake up each day. It was what her mother had done, and Smallkit was only respecting her wishes. Getting onto her little paws, Smallkit watched as her brother was busy playing with others. She couldn't do that, she didn't deserve to be happy. Making her way out of the nursery, Smallkit watched the camp for a few moments. Why did ShadowClan still want her around? Maybe if she just left everything would be better. Yes, she was sure it would be. Now that her mind was made up, she just had to figure a way to do this. Her white fur was still ungroomed, it wasn't as if anyone helped her groom it. Her brother tried, but it was just too much. But she couldn't think about her fur right now, it mattered as much as she did. There was only one problem, the leader had made residence on the entrance of camp. He seemed lost in thought, maybe she could make it out without him noticing. Looking back toward the nursery for one moment, she knew this would hurt her brother but he would move on, he was strong. Smallkit made her way to the entrance, trying her best to avoid other cats on her way. Her green eyes were cast toward the ground, not even thinking of looking up. When she reached the entrance and the large cat, she hoped she could pass right through...but she couldn't help give one last look to the nursery, where her bad memories were constant. Notes: Wow..totally made this a little darker than I originally planned...don't worry she cheers up eventually. Tags: ashenstar , other SC cats

this little light of mine i'm gonna let it shine The stars that peered down through the red-tainted clouds shone brightly tonight. It made Ashenstar feel closer to his ancestors, something he had not felt in some time. Don’t be mistaken, Ashenstar loved his clan and his ancestors dearly. He would turn to them at every opportunity and was certain that they guided his path to this day. Sure, it wasn’t a great path, but it was his to walk alone. Shifting and settling in for a long night, the leader of ShadowClan stared out into the darkening forest. His heart felt heavy as it always did, but he would not let that stop him. ShadowClan needed him! So he sat dutifully and allowed the minutes to pass in silence. He wasn’t sure how long it had been, but the darkening skies above made it clear that soon his clan would settle in for sleep. The night was cool, but not cold enough to snow. They had been blessed this year, leafbare had shown its face only briefly before the snow melted and left the clans. Could it still snow? Maybe. But for now, there would be plenty of prey. The energy of camp was fading, warriors bidding their goodnights and apprentices finally settling down for the evening. Like every other night though, the nursery was filled with mewls. It was fascinating how the kits always found their energy as the day ended rather than when the day began. They would stay awake until late in the night and terrorize their mothers. The thought made the tom smirk before he sighed, the movement causing his shoulders to rise and fall. How he wished that his kits were within that nursery. He supposed they would be about five moons by now. The great brute sat with his tail tucked tightly around his paws, ears erect and twitching to the sounds around him. In the distance, he could hear a great rustling from outside of camp. It was far enough away where he was not worried - yet - and he instead focused his attention on a new sound. He could hear the sound of approaching steps but the sound was so soft that he had to strain to hear it. The creature that was pretty small, so at first he was going to write it off before he tasted the air. The smell of a fellow cat caused him to shift slowly, turning his gaze downward onto a small white she-cat. How could she possibly be that small? His mind racked his brain, very aware that the little feline before him was a kit. “ Smallkit?” He questions out loud, uncertain for only a brief moment before he remembered her parents. The deceased cats of his clan whom had both attempted to harm this little she-cat. Had they not suffered such awful fates, he knew that they would no longer be apart of his clan. Ashenstar only wished that he could have protected one of the youngest cats in his clan from this darkness. “ What are you doing about at this time of night?” He asked, his eyes taking in the she-cat before glancing toward the entrance of camp. He hoped his suspicions were false but he feared the worst. She belonged here, hopefully he could show her that.

Smallkit Bad memories just continued to haunt her every night. It was hard to get a full night of sleep, it was doubtful she ever had. Even living with her mother the sleep she got was usually minimal. So her eyes were tired, her body was tired, her mind was tired...point is she was just tired. The nightmare of seeing their deaths constantly played in her mind and she found that even in waking moments she daydreamed about it. Even closing her eyes for one second weighed heavily on her. But she didn't want to worry her brother, he was too happy and kind to face this pain. She didn't want to ruin his life even more than her being born had. If she hadn't been born, he would be an only kit with both parents to love and dote on him..not the vengeful duo they had experienced. He deserved much more. She would be doing him a favor, he could forget all about her and only have himself to worry about. It seemed as if delaying had caused her to almost change her mind. But still, she knew it was better this way. What she had expected to happen was she would just walk out of camp, and curl up somewhere and freeze to death, or be eaten by an animal of some kind...after all very few animals were smaller than she was. But like everything else in her life, expectations are not reality. The reality of it all came crashing down when she heard her name spoken. Great, she should have known better. Ashenstar was the leader for a reason. He didn't become leader just to have a kit sneak past him. So when her name becomes a question, she just simply nods. Yes...that is her name. At least he called her by her name, unlike her parents...they just called her useless or weak. Hearing her own name still sounded strange to her, sure her brother called her by it, but usually the two needed no words, just the simple 'hey' or 'whats up' worked for them. Besides, if she was looking at her brother, clearly she was talking to him, not some cat named Bigheadpaw. And then came the inevitable question, the one she did not want to answer but knew she had to. It was the leader of the clan, and he deserved to know. She stumbled over her answer for a moment, not even dare looking at more than his paws. She couldn't look a cat in the eye. So to answer his question, she gave him one of her own. "I'm going to go disappear. I can't be here anymore, I don't need to hurt anyone else. I'm a danger to the clan, and I should not be allowed to stay, or even live anymore." Smallkit mewed, her voice almost as small as her body. "My family didn't want me, and my brother doesn't need me. He has friends, he will be fine. I'm weak and useless and I will never be a warrior, I'll never be anything other than a bother to the clan." And there it went, the mantra that her parents had instilled in her from birth. The words she spoke were hauntingly steady and well-rehearsed, as if she had said them millions of times, which knowing her parents she had. Notes: None Tags: ashenstar

this little light of mine i'm gonna let it shine The entire clan knew the story of Smallkit. Truthfully, it was a mystery to Ashenstar how she held it together so well. She was stronger than most cats that were three times her age. He was suffering too, so he could imagine her pain. True, he’d always had the love of his family, but she had not. He’d heard the awful things that were said by other queens who witnessed the horrors. He had been on the first patrol that saved the kit when her father had been killed. The image of her standing there, shellshocked, was burned into his mind. As leader now, it was his duty to make sure all the cats of his clan were taken care of. This little she-cat would be no exception. He had to speak with the queens tomorrow, he made a mental note, to make sure that both Smallkit and Blazekit had someone to care for them how a mother truly should. He looked down at the small ball of fur at his paws, marveled at how small she was. His experience with kits was lacking - though it shouldn’t have been. He felt a pang in his heart for realization that his own kits - who were likely dead - lived in fear and only knew that for their short lives. A flare of anger touched his eyes, but he quickly extinguished it with a deep breath. Tonight was not about him, it was about the broken she-kit that stood before him. When he questioned her name, it was not meant to say he didn’t know it. It was more of a recognition to the fact that she was there and questioning why she was. He heard the stories of little Blazekit and Smallkit, how they did everything together. His heart hurt at the thought of them losing eah other and being forced to live alone. Ashenstar wouldn’t let that happen. Her head bobbed in a nod, and he watched on in silence, awaiting a response to his question of what she was doing out and about on this evening. What he expected was nothing like the horror he heard. Perhaps he thought that he would hear the playful ramblings of a kit, a story about how she was off to catch firebugs or explore the night. But this… this made his heart hurt. The tom sat with his mouth parted, as if he was going to speak, but nothing would come from his mouth. How could he say things would get better when he himself knew that it wasn’t that easy. He didn’t want to lie to young Smallkit, after the harsh life she’d lived thusfar, she deserved more than that. His eyes shown with longing to make it better, to take her pain away but again, it wasn’t that simple. It was silent for several long moments as he watched the kit, taking her in. The way she avoided his gaze and looked at his paws when she spoke. The way she sounded so ready to give up everything because of what had been said to her during the moons that she should have been filled with nothing but love. He thought of his own mother, Mothfrost, how she did everything for her kits, and he knew that he wanted to show this kit the same thing. “ Smallkit…” He began, his usually strong voice unbelievably soft and gentle. “ I know the pain you feel, at least, I can try to know it.” He licked his lips and averted his gaze toward the stars, a silent prayer for his past leader to help him now. “ You are a wonderful kit, and you have never once been a burden to anyone here. You are just as much a cat of ShadowClan as myself or Lionstar before me. Believe me when I say that the life your parents provided for you was unjust. They had a responsibility to you and to Blazekit that they did not fulfill. I take full responsibility for that.” This was hard, really hard. Explaining things to a warrior that was at this point was much easier, he could sing the praises they did for moons and moons to come. To a kit who doesn’t understand the weight of her actions and that there are times of darkness in every life, it wasn’t that easy. “ We, as a clan, need you. One day, you will be just as strong and fierce as any of the warriors in this clan. I know this because I’ve seen you, Smallkit. You’ve held on through everything you’ve been given so far, and I believe that you can continue to do so.” He felt his paws shaking, not from the cold, but from rage. Rage at the fact that he had not been able to stop this sooner. But he wouldn’t give up on Smallkit now. He would do anything to see her be the warrior he knew she could be. “ Let me tell you a secret, Smallkit. You are stronger than me.” His voice was almost a whisper and he crouched down to the little she-cat’s level. His soft, white belly fur pressed against the dirt of ShadowClan’s clearing and he brought his amber eyes down to her level. They were sincere as ever. “ I lost family too. Before you were born. And I live with that pain every day. But I do not control it as well as you do.” Ashenstar took a shaky breath before cracking a small smile. “ So explain to me how ShadowClan could possibly be worse off with a kit as strong as yourself?”

Smallkit It was all she could do to not have her mouth wide open, gaping in awe. The leader of the clan was right in front of her...the Leader! Not just some ordinary warrior, or even an apprentice who was speaking to her, but Ashenstar himself. To this kit this was a huge deal. She couldn't wait to tell her brother....wait not. She had a mission that didn't involve speaking to her brother, or well...speaking to anyone. She couldn't afford to get distracted by things such as her one and only brother. She had places to go, things to do, missions to complete. Ones that didn't involve others. How could anyone lie to the leader of the clan? This was Smallkit's first thought right before she spoke. Better yet, how could anyone lie to well...another cat? Smallkit, despite all of her physical and mental pain, and so much turmoil, still had a slight innocence about her. Lying was a concept not easily grasped for this young kit. Most of what Smallkit was thinking pretty much came out of her mouth, whether it was intentional or not. It wasn't as if she ever had the chance to lie either. She never really saw her father, he really only ever came to the nursery to see her brother anyway. The only time she truly saw him was that day...And her mother only ever spoke to her with her claws, or the retorts of how weak and how much of a burden she was. All she really ever had to speak to was her brother. And now he was starting to drift away from her, so instead of lying to him she would just keep her mouth shut. The words she spoke to the leader were the absolute truth, lying was not in her vocabulary. Smallkit was no ordinary kit. Due to her history most kits didn't want to play with her. It was usually either one reason or another, sometimes a bit of both. Some saw her as the kit who killed her parents (obviously gossip from the queens had been overheard here), others saw her as the tiny kit who was extremely fragile. Either way, no one really wanted to play with her. Even if the queens told their kits they had to play with her, it wasn't them making the decisions, it was the queens, and the kits usually tired of Smallkit soon anyway, ignoring her shortly after the queens stopped looking. Her brother fell in the latter category. He was starting to grow more and more, while her size had not changed. He was now easily twice her size, as were most of the other kits in the nursery. Only newborns at this point were smaller than her. It was almost like a right of passage for the newborns...see who was the first to get larger than Smallkit. That's when the older kits would play with the younger ones. Blazekit was afraid to play with his sister like he did other kits, not wanting to hurt her. She was sick of the pity looks he threw at her when the other kits asked him to play and she wasn't invited. But the moment she heart his voice once again saying her name, Smallkit chanced it by looking up at him for a quick moment. The moment lasted a few seconds at best, before she realized she was staring and immediately looked back down. Wait...he knows her pain? This caused green eyes to quickly look back up in disbelief. The words that followed were ever harder to believe! No, she was a burden, she had to be, she was told she was! She had to be one. And what did he mean by her parents being unjust..they were just being her parents, she didn't know parents were suppose to act different. Wasn't that her fault? It always was her fault, even if she wasn't around blame was placed on her. Why is he taking responsibility for it? He wasn't there! Her eyes were full of perplexion. "But my mother said I wasn't even suppose to be born, I wasn't suppose to live past a few hours at most. It was my fault my father wanted to hurt me, and didn't want to pay attention to her anymore. So it's really not my fault, it's theirs? I belong here?" her mind was swarming with questions, and only a few were able to surface, and escape from her mouth, others continued to just cloud her mind. He had to be joking right? The whole clan doesn't need her. But she was able to crack a smile at the thought. "I'm not strong, I'm weak." she protested, a little less confused this time as she spoke these words. The words still haunted her and trying to chance what had been instilled in her would take time, not just seconds, but possibly moons. His encouraging words, although, were starting to break down a few walls, even the walls telling her she needed to stop giving him eye contact and look at the ground. Her gaze was still steadily on Ashenstar. Smallkit's eyes were now widening even more. No one ever told her secrets, she never had someone who even wanted to talk with her, with the exception of her brother. She was definitely interested in this secret. A secret from the leader should be really good! And she would keep it a secret no matter what. It wasn't as if she had anyone to tell it to anyway. How was she stronger than Ashenstar, though? He was huge! (Then again to Smallkit apprentices were huge) Now he was getting to her level, it was easier to see him now. Her neck was really sore from looking up (it wasn't used to looking up at all), so it was nice to give it a break. He had lost family like her? But she didn't kill them like she had. It was her fault her family was gone. "Did you hurt them like I hurt my parents?" her question was sincere, her head even tilting to the side. Now he was saying she had control. Well at least she had something in the positive quality column. The negatives list wasn't near as long as it was. The more she spoke to Ashenstar, the longer the positive side was growing and evening out the negative. His next words made her stop and think for a moment. Why did ShadowClan not need her? There were plenty of reasons still she could think of, but the main one that was still on her mind came out first. "Cause I won't be able to hurt anyone else if I'm not here. You won't have to worry about losing warriors, or other kits losing their parents just because I'm around. Everyone dies around me. I won't let that happen to others. I'll just continue to make ShadowClan lose all of its good warriors." eyes went back down to the ground as Smallkit felt her energy depleting. Notes: Ashenstar makes me melt. XDD Tags: ashenstar

this little light of mine i'm gonna let it shine Watching the small she-kit before him, Ashenstar felt a wave of guilt. This conversation was too much for a mere kitten to understand. Some warriors - even cats past his own age - struggled with hearing the truth the way he had just described it. Having something ingrained into your soul from an early age was imperative to how you thought. Being broken was not something to easily come back from, truthfully he was feeling foolish for thinking it would be this easy. But he didn't waver. " Your mother..." He started, before pausing, feeling a wave of anger flare back through him at the thought of what had happened. " Did not do her job properly. She should have nurtured you, not hurt you." The large gray tom was visibly stressed by this conversation, his eyes gazing past the she-cat now, toward the nursery where the sounds of other kits had begun to fade. Soon, she too would need to be headed that way. But he could not let his eyes off her yet. " And this will never be your fault, Smallkit." His voice was the most stern it had been the entire conversation. This was the one thing that he couldn't stand, the small kit blaming herself. She didn't know better and damn it, he'd teach her. " Saying that it was your fault would be like saying you are the reason the sun sets every day, or the birds continue to sing. This was not your fault, it was out of your control - and mine." Again, his voice took on a feeling of sadness. He wanted nothing more than to turn this around and take away the sadness that this she-cat had been burdened with. Large, glowing amber eyes stared back at the small creature before him. He took her in, watching the look of despair - the ultimate sadness that plagued her soul. His duty as a leader - failed within a few short moons. The tom tilted his head. So she didn't feel like she was strong... with her being such a young age, there wasn't much he could do. A small piece of him wanted to take her out of the camp tomorrow - to show her the things that she could see, the wonders she would miss. But he knew it for the best that they stay in camp. So he'd devise a new plan instead. His heart felt heavy as she asked him if he had been the one to cause harm to his family. Truthfully, he thought for a brief second that it would be better than their true fate. " No, young one." Ashenstar responded sadly. " They were hurt by someone else that was supposed to protect them and love them. I won't let you suffer the same fate any longer, though." He said with a gentle voice, though his words were genuine. He wanted nothing more than to help Smallkit during her time of need. He thought and thought, and finally he knew how. " Tell you what, Smallkit." He began, a mischievous smile gracing his features. " I'm in need of an advisor..." He could hear his deputy chastise him now, but the tom ignored the thought that wrestled in the back of his mind. What mattered most now was distracting the young she-cat from her depressed thoughts. " I think you'd be a great fit. You're very wise - and you're small! You can hide out and watch things for me. That's a tough job, but I don't know a single cat that could do it better." His eyes were alight while he tried to convince this little she of his need for her. " You'd be preforming a great service to ShadowClan. There is no chance of anyone getting hurt. You can show your clan that they need you, like I do."

Smallkit Smallkit's green gaze was faltering, the little kit was trying her best to keep her attention on the leader but with so many other sounds it was hard. Despite the lateness, she could still hear things rustling and moving, and being a kit and keeping her attention on one spot for more than five seconds was quite an accomplishment. Smallkit was still young, still had that short attention span, but she was fighting it. She was itching to go investigate, but knew she couldn't...not yet. Talking with the leader was a privilege, and for all she knew this would be her last talk with him, she would make it count. He was showing her kindness, something that she was reluctant about. Kindness from her parents had never occurred, just spending the time to talk to her was the best thing in the world. Blinking she didn't understand his words right. Her mother wasn't suppose to hurt her? But she was bad, she wasn't suppose to be born. That was her fault. "But I needed to be hurt, I didn't look like my father and that was my fault." her head was tilted to the side in confusion. And what was this nurture word he spoke of? Did that mean that she wasn't suppose to hurt her? How can it not be her fault, everything bad was always her fault. Her eyes were now once again on the ground, so much confusion was in her mind right now. What was real? What was lies? But the more he explained, the more Smallkit was starting to understand. Maybe everything wrong in her life wasn't because of her, it was because of what was done to her. A small sliver of realization dawned in her eyes as she looked back up. He began to speak of those who was hurt again, and she nodded. "If they were here, I'm sure they would love you." Her little face brightened up at a thought. "I could be your family! Then you won't have to be sad like me! I can try to help with your pain! I promise I can be good, I won't even move, or speak if you don't want me to, I usually don't anyway, so that's not hard!" Ashenstar's next words really brought an excited look to the kit's face. If she hadn't been bright before, by now she was beaming. She didn't know what the word advisor meant, but if the leader needed one, she could do it! He was right, she was small (hence her name), and she did know the good hiding spots in camp. No one would ever see her. She thought about it for several moments, debating on whether or not she could do this, but the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to do it. It would involve her actually staying and getting rid of her previous plan though...which was hard. "I'll do it. But if I start being bad, let me know, I'll stop and leave so you won't have to worry about me anymore." If all else failed, she could always just redo her plans later on, maybe sometime when Ashenstar wasn't around. Notes: Apologies this took so long. Tags: ashenstar

this little light of mine i'm gonna let it shine The stars were beginning to shine overhead and Ashenstar knew that he needed to send the little she-kit back into the nursery before she caught a cold. This night was dark and cold and he had to make sure that she was taken care of. She may not be able to understand the wrong that was done to her, but the large gray tabby that looked down and studied this little she-kit... well he'd never be able to forgive it. He wanted to coddle her and assure her that everything was all right, but he knew that it would not be that easy. Even now as she explained that she deserved to be hurt, he felt this uncontrollable need to protect her from the dangers of the world around her. Smallkit would never know more harm as long as he was alive. The ShadowClan leader made a vow to himself that this would be true. But his heart softened as the look in the she-kit's eyes. He saw clarity, he saw hope and it made him feel just a little bit better. A gentle purr started at the base of his throat and he couldn't help but feel a little warmer in the cold of the evening. When she looked back up at him, he could sense that her world would change - slowly - but it would change. All Ashenstar wanted was to change this little she-cat's life for the better, and he'd be damned if he didn't. Her next words nearly made the huge tom topple over with disbelief - the words of wisdom that came from the tiny kit shouldn't have surprised him. He tried to convince himself that this was normal. That her ability to understand was inconceivable compared to the cats of his clan. A smile touched his face and for once, Ashenstar felt like he wouldn't be able to contain his joy. His heart felt full for the first time in several moons. While he had always been soft, to this little she-cat, his walls were gone. His eyes welled with happiness and a twinge of sadness at the same time. He didn't want her to change for him. He wanted Smallkit to grow up with some kind of love in her life. If he was the only one that provided it then fine, he would be. " Silly Smallkit, you can do whatever you please. I'd be fortunate to have your company." He said with a smile, finally settling down at her level. He laid down on the ground beside her, drawing his tongue over his front leg, smoothing his fur down. He glanced at the she-kit before him and offered her a smile, seeing her face beam at the mention of being his advisor. He loved the enthusiasm, something he wasn't sure he would get to see if he didn't try to force the happiness from her. " All you have to do is keep an eye on things, and if you see anything funny, tell me, okay?" He reminded her, not wanting her to get underfoot but at the same time help the small kit with the issues she was clearly struggling with internally. It was obvious that Ashenstar wanted nothing more than to keep the members of his clan safe and happy. Smallkit was surely no exception to that. " You will do a great job, Smallkit. I know you will." He reassured her. " And if any of your friends ask, make sure to tell them it's a secret mission from me. They'll be impressed." He said with a smirk. He remembered being a kit all those moons ago. The false patrols he and his siblings went on while in the nursery. None of them were personally assigned by the leader though.

Smallkit In just the short time she had been out here, she could already feel a difference in the temperature. The nursery had been so warm, like usual. It hadn't been too bad when she first stepped outside, but now she was starting to feel a slight chill. A shiver ran through her body, but she wasn't moving or doing anything about it. She had been conditioned to just sit and take it, no matter what the temperature she was not allowed to whine or complain. Complaining only made the scars deeper. So early on she had learned to keep her mouth shut tight. Sure, her body could take quite a bit, it had to at this point to be able to survive what she had, but still the sun had gone down long ago. And to think she had planned to go out in the territory, all alone. With her being so small and not having the thickest pelt, it wouldn't have taken long for her to freeze to her death. His words brought out something Smallkit couldn't describe. She could do that...he wanted to be around her? Well that was a first. There was a surge of something deep inside. Is this what happiness felt like? He was breaking down her own walls, the walls of self-doubt and sadness. The walls were still there but they were slowly minimizing in just the short time she had been speaking with the leader. A smile of her own appeared, something this little kit was sure wasn't possible for her to do...that is before meeting and speaking with Ashenstar, even if this encounter had been by chance. When her assignment was given, she nodded, trying her best to sit straight and tall to prove she was big enough (or well small enough) in her case to get the job done. This was her big chance to prove to all the kits, and anyone who was skeptical about her. It as an assignment from the leader himself, she couldn't fail. But this was something she could do. He had made sure of it. And then the kind words started, the words of encouragement. He wasn't yelling at her or making fun of her. He was just simply being kind. She was flabbergasted. This was new for her, having so much praise, even if it was little any praise was new and exciting. Her eyes were wide with this new happiness feeling she was experiencing. "But I don't have friends. They don't talk to me....but I can tell my brother!" The thought of her brother sent something inside her once again. She had almost left him, and for that she felt guiltier now that she was staying. Smallkit had another shiver go through her body, and her small frame was definitely feeling it now. The large tom was so close that Smallkit couldn't help herself. She pressed her body into his larger one, sighing in relief. He was warm! "You are so nice. I wish you could have been my father." came a quiet mew from the kit, as she drowsily spoke. But then a thought occurred to her and suddenly bounced back up. "Can you be my new one? I promise I'll be the bestest kit ever!" she mewed. Notes: n/a Tags: ashenstar

we want more than the world has to offer.
[presto] 447 Smallkit dawwww. These little cuties. I love small so much. <3 [/presto] The temperature was having it's affect on the small white kit before him and Ashenstar knew that soon he would have to usher her back to the warmth of the nursery to ensure that she got the rest she needed for her next day. His deep amber eyes were shining with a deep passion and happiness. His tail flicked back and forth across his paws and he inched closer to Smallkit. Lowering his head, the tom ran his tongue across the top of her head, brushing her hair in the wrong direction attempting to warm her even if it was a little bit. Ashenstar offered a friendly smile before sitting back, not wanting to scare her.
In his time as the leader of ShadowClan, he knew that there were many things that had been out of his control. The loss of his kits, the terrors that this little kit had endured. The fire in ThunderClan territory... even though it did not have anything to ShadowClan, the fire had been something that all leaders had wished never happened. It upset the balance of the forest. StarClan had given no warning of this terrible night so for many cats it felt as though it was their goal to have the fourth clan of the forest fal to the flames.
Ashenstar offered a laugh when Smallkit said she didn't have any friend. "Well don't you worry about that, Smallkit. You're a great kit, you'll make good friends." He said with a smile. "Just give it time, little one." His voice was soft and gentle, hoping not to frighten the kit before him. He was happy to have her in his life - even if it had been delayed until now. While things were often hard and life often had a funny way of showing it's gentle side, he was sure that gracing him with Smallkit was it's way of doing so.
Her next words melted his, usually tough, demeanor. The tabby tom looked at her with a shocked look on his face, he could hardly believe that she was asking if he would be her father. It was shocking, but he was honored. "OF course, little one. I would be honored." His smile was genuine. For the first time in moons. "Yours, and Blazekit if he'll let me. You both need someone, and I'll do everything I can to make sure you are taken care of from this point forward. Both of you. We'll start first thing in the morning by finding you a mother who can care for you during the day. I promise things are going to go well." He whispered, nuzzling the top of the little she-kit's head.

Smallkit It was a funny feeling, having the softness and warmth of a tongue on her fur. Her mother had never really given her a bath, other than the harsh licks, or even just showing some slight act of kindness of trying to warm her. How was she suppose to react to someone being this kind to her? She did the only thing she knew, keep still. But even this small act of kindness was causing the small kit to purr in delight. This felt so good, and she could feel herself getting slightly warmer...although it did feel funny having her fur moving in the opposite direction. But was she complaining? No way! All fear of the tom was now gone, she liked him. He showed her something few had done before, kindness. Smallkit gave the leader a funny look when he mentioned she would eventually have friends. What? No, that wasn't possible. No one wanted to be her friend, never would. She was just meant to be all alone. Give what time? She's already wasted three moons of her life with no friends! How much time did she need? Maybe the three more to be an apprentice? But that was soooo far away. The next thing she knew the words she had spoken were lingering in her mind. Had she really just asked him to be her father? Oh well, she could handle the rejection anyway, it wasn't as if he would...no he couldn't have. He would be honored? A squeal of pure delight came out of her mouth, sounding so much larger than her body. Did she really go from not having a father, to having Ashenstar be hers? Best. Day. Ever. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" she mewed, her previous sleepiness long gone as she bounced around the large tom with mewls of "I have a daddy, I have a daddy." continuously coming from the white ball of fur. "Blazekit will be so happy too! I'll tell him in a bit, he's gonna love you! My old daddy wasn't mean to him, but he wasn't nice either. He needs someone like you in his life." and there she went with her wise sounding words. But then again, she was a three moon old kit and one that had been through so much in her short life. So the next thing said shouldn't have been a surprise coming from her mouth. "Why do I need a mother? You are all I need! I don't need a mommy, mine was enough and I don't want to be a burden to another cat! I can't have another mommy, I don't know how to be around a mommy. Can't I just be with you during the day? I can help you hunt! I'm good at staying quiet!" the little kit was starting to panic at just the thought of another she-cat in her life. It meant that she could get hurt again, and it meant that she had to be the perfect kit again. She couldn't mess it up. She had to be perfect. Notes: n/a Tags: ashenstar
