so you'd like to be a friend to slaterunner? well, he is a good friend to have, as sharp wit and and a clever tongue are things you would want on your side, but the difficulty here is that slate doesn't... have a lot of friends. at least not real friends; ones where the loyalty or intimacy go beyond just acquaintances. slate is the type of tom to be friendly to most any cat he meets and likes to get on everyone's good side, yet he's particular about about letting anyone too close unless he really feels a bond or sees some other benefit to doing so. you can get around this, though. for one, being persistent is enough to chip away at the polite distance he tends to keep with others and he's naturally drawn to cats who stand out in some way. maybe they're strong. or adventurous. or clever. or just loud. getting close with slaterunner is far from impossible, honestly, and he's definitely a useful ally since his loyalty is given out very carefully. once you have it he will almost always stick with you.

as someone who prides himself on keeping his emotions in check and not getting tangled up in drama, slate really avoids making enemies. this isn't to say that nothing bothers him— if you're overly reckless or noisy or generally annoying that can be enough to earn his dislike —but when that happens he steps back, rather than starting a fight. however if you were to actively poke at him and keep getting in his face he can be surprisingly venomous in response. he'll hiss insults and stew on his grudge, happily taking the chance to tear at your ear or nose should the opportunity present itself. he's mean when he's angry. 

LOVERS

for slaterunner, this section really just expands upon how friendship works for him. getting into a real, comitted relationship with him would take time and persistence before he decides it's worth the risk to give his heart away (only his family have held pieces of it so far, and he's been hurt because of that) so be prepared to work at it. this doesn't count the fact that slate is very fond of flirting. it ties into how he likes to come off as friendly, to make a good first impression, and he's well aware of the fact that flattery gets him far in life. if he finds you attractive, he'll say so. this has probably caused him to lead on quite a few cats (maybe even break some hearts, unknowingly) since this flirting is all casual.
